Mayday Concert

September 17, 2011 Leave a comment

we jus watched the Mayday concert! ok to be precise, we jus watched a Mayday concert movie at GV marina hah. this is a new genre of movie where the content is actually a concert in 3D. for the Mayday one, the “live” concert (which used footages from its DNA world tour in different cities like taipei, HK and shanghai) is interwined with 3 short stories, simple yet sweet, with a tinge of humour here and there. though the 3 stories are unrelated, they are all set around Mayday’s DNA world tour stop in shanghai.

Mayday 3DNA

in the approximately 1.5hr movie, they performed abt 10 or so songs. the selected songs are mostly highly popular so that audience could all sing-along hah. of cos, the whole experience is nowhere near a live concert, in terms of atmosphere, audio effects etc. but it is not bad an experience too. though at $20 per ticket, the price is indeed a bit steep. cant wait to attend their live concert next time! hah.

think this 3D concert movie  is on limited run, so if u are a Mayday’s fan, catch it before it is gone!

Recommendations

been to 2 restaurants in the past week that are great for gathering with a grp of frens. so here im sharing with everyone!

recommendation 1: 15 minutes cafe and bar, in laselle building, 1 McNally Street 187940

15 minutes

a colleague brought us there last thurs evening. a really nice place for a group of frens to hangout, chill and chit chat. located in the artsy laselle, this cafe is like a glasshouse with high ceilings. the canteen-style table and bench can sit 8 ppl comfortably ha. food wise, the pizzas are not bad. the chicken wings can try too. burger is a no no and pastas are a tad too salty. but well, this place wins at its ambience and design la. there is a live band playing on wed, fri and sat too!

recommendation 2: pepperoni pizzeria, 7 Binjai Park 589821 (another outlet at 6 Greenwood Ave 289195)

pepperoni pizzeria

first went to the greenwood ave outlet several months ago with impre programmers for our gathering. a very nice and relaxed place tucked in bt timah area. went with dear last fri but found that it was closed for renovation. but pasted on their closed door was a notice saying they have a new outlet at binjai park and so we went! nice decor too at this new outlet, with old-school american theme. they are famous for thin-crust pizzas and you can choose 2 different toppings on one pizza. would like to try the super XXL pizza, which measures a whopping 21 inches in diameter, the next time i get to visit with a grp of frens ha. another must-try is their portobello mushroom which is super good and super big!

gather ur good frens and check out these 2 restaurants soon!

The Karate Kid

June 12, 2010 4 comments

this karate kid is a remake of an old film in 1984 of the same title. i have nt watched tt before but i enjoyed this version by jackien chan and jaden smith alot! though plot is simple (and predictable), other factors made it a great movie. heartwarming, amazing acting by jaden smith, nice kungfu, peppered with funny moments.

the karate kid 2010

go catch it if you have not!

oh by the way, if you have HSBC credit card, should go get the GV movie card where 10 movies (weekday or weekend) cost only $75. wads good abt this is tt this card can be used to purchase tickets online also, need not be over the box office. i just got mine today, abit late i noe haha. i still thot my safra $8 weekend movie tickets (which can b bought online as well) is the best deal liao. shld hav enquired abt this HSBC card earlier ha.

ip man 2 - must watch!

this show really never disappoints haha. though the plot was simple, it was packed with lotsa actions and it really made you feel proud being a chinese. a great show tt shld not be missed. many ppl will tend to compare which is better – iron man 2 or ip man 2. a fren asked a question, “after watching both, who would you wish to become? iron man or ip man?” hahaha. i wld choose the latter. so, ip man 2 is better!

Starhub Urban Freestyle Run, Thumbs Down!

April 11, 2010 2 comments

i feel so paiseh jioing shiwei, shanjing and junan to spend $55 bucks on this sucky run. all i can say is that their marketing was very well done, successfully marketing a lousy race into an interesting one tt made us part $55 to participate. haha.

us at padang before the sucky run

we reached padang at 2plus pm to deposit our bags. cos it was raining in the morn, the ground was super muddy la. flag off was supposed to be at 3pm, staggard style. by the time we could step pass the starting line, it was alr 3.40pm. goodness, stood there with all the sticky runners on the muddy ground under the hot sun for 40mins! punishing.

the run was on pavement instead of on closed roads. and at least 50% of the participants were walkers instead of runners. totally no atmosphere of a running event, tt pushes one to run non-stop. the supposedly highlight of the run – the obstacles – was a joke. they were childish, boring, just totally nt fun. esp the “cube and stickers” obstacle, wad the hell lo. in a nutshell, the whole race was totally disappointing and time-wasting la.

the only redemption point – goodie bag tt incl 2 GV movie vouchers and 2 popcorn combos hahha.

after the run, it was time for some dinner and then our favourite activity for 4 ppl haha. jus bought a new  mahjong table and yest was the first time playing on it. good investment! my initial outlay of $45 was recouped after 2 games hahaha. thanks shanjing for sponsoring my mahjong table! someone sponsor me new set of mahjong tiles soon? haha.

after mahjong, met dear to watch the taiwanese movie “monga” at jurong point. cos the movie was at 11.30pm and lasted more than 2 hrs, i was dead beat man. but okie la at least the movie was nt too bad, perhaps cos i dun hav much expectations for it in the first place haha.

The Line at Shangri-La

March 21, 2010 4 comments

the line at shangri-la is one of the top buffets in singapore and we have been wanting to try tt. but hav nt cos the price is pretty steep, at $68++ per person for weekend dinner. but this time, decided to splurge to cele my small bonus payout haa.  wanted to try the seafood nite one, but it is on thurs so nt tt gd since fri gt work. so settled on sat dinner.

reached the hotel at 6plus pm. the restaurant is big and quite nice i thot. we were given a corner table and it was time to hoot the food! there were so many stations – indian, local, japanese, chinese, western, desserts, seafood etc. food variety was great indeed ha.

The Line at Shangri-La

the quality of food wasnt too bad too. liked the fresh oysters, prawns, sashimi, beef prime ribs, satays, and many more. we were alr very full by the 4th or 5th rounds of food ha.

Food

More food

finally it was time for desserts! the freshly made crepes is nice! so is the mud cake, ice cream, choc fondue, and others.

Desserts

really super full man. tat is always the case for buffet lo. over-eat, over-stuffed, and in the end didnt feel too gd. anyway, shangri-la is celebrating its 38th anniversary and thus there is a whopping 43% (i dunno why it is not 38% discount..) and the final bill came up to be only $91.25. okie la quite worth it ha. but mayb cos i hav heard too much gd things abt the line and hence hav high expectations of it. so in e end feel tt though it is gd, i thot it is abit over-rated. mayb shld try its seafood nite next time haha.

anyway after the dinner, it was alr 9plus pm ha. just nice in time for our movie “up in the air” at plaza sing. the movie was okie la, dunno why so many ppl say it is super nice ha.

An Encounter with Broadway Beng

December 5, 2009 Leave a comment

TGIF! after work, went for a musical with dear at esplanade. watched broadway beng – jiak liu lian. haha by the name, shld alr noe it is a very local musical. yup, indeed it is.

broadway beng, esplanade theatre, 3-12 dec 2009

a summary below, from sistic website:

“The wait is over! Sebastian Tan a.k.a.Broadway Beng returns with a “super-size” comedy cabaret at THE ESPLANADE! It’s time to Jiak Liu Lian! (Eat durian!)

What does the Queen of England have in common with the Broadway Beng? Which musical will he ‘Hokkien-nize’? Why is Beng fashion always so ‘orbit’ (Off-beat)? Come watch the show and find out!

This fourth installment promises more glitz, more glamour and more side-splitting laughter as Broadway Beng takes on the Liu Lian… er, we mean, The Esplanade, with his 8 all-singing, all-dancing “Chio Buus and ‘Tok Kong’ Ge Tai Band” “

to enjoy this show, certain level of proficiency in hokkien language is required. if nt, u wun b able to understand a large part of it and also, many of his jokes, songs etc. haha. cant help but think he is really pretty talented. able to hold a show on his own (most of the time) for 2plus hrs! he sang (he can sing really well), he joked, he acted.

quite an entertaining time we had ha. at $19 per ticket (cheapest one, sitting at the last row at the highest level. wah lau. haha), it was really worth it. the show will b on till 12 dec, so if interested, go book ur tix now!

Own Time Own Target

July 23, 2009 Leave a comment

went to catch this with dear yest after work. “own time own target” features a play entitled “full tank!” and a musical called “botak boys”. it was held at e drama centre at national library and lasted abt 2.5 hrs. i bought e cheapest tickets, costing abt $32 each (after discount) but luckily e theatre wasnt full and we were given free upgrades haha. shiok la, from circle 2 seats at 3rd level to e stage level ha.

own time own target.

own time own target.

from sistic website:

FULL TANK by Laremy Lee – In the midst of an island-wide terrorist manhunt that’s whipped the authorities and the media into a frenzy, Sergeant Leroy and his motley crew hijack a tank and go AWOL, embarking on a joyride through Singapore’s streets! Are they criminals or heroes? Or are they just plain crazy? Join them on a hilariously bizarre and uniquely Singaporean road-trip, where they encounter madcap ministers, hard – nosed journalists, a hot Mamasan and her China hostesses!

BOTAK BOYS by Julian Wong – BMT is every Singaporean male’s nightmare. Or is it? Experience the heartache and hilarity, the bravery and the rude shocks as Justin and his blur bunkmates sing and dance their way through Tekong! Will Justin ever make friends? Will they all survive getting ‘tekan-ed’? And will Justin’s little secret be exposed? Relive the sweat, tears, friendship and laughter of your BMT days with this heartwarming musical comedy about becoming a man – SAF-style!

both were peppered with lotsa of humour and mild sexual content. these, coupled with e excellent acting and singing by e all-men crew, made “own time own target” a well worth it show. it certainly brought much laughter to us after a day at work. gd show to unwind la haha. and esp for e guys, i guess it has indeed brought back some bittersweet NS days memories ha. those were e days..

Suspect X and Impresario 2009

March 1, 2009 1 comment

went to catch e new jap movie “Suspect X” with dear at jurong point on sat afternoon. although e murderer is known right from e start, e whole show is still very exciting as e hidden story unfolds. the brilliance of e genius physicist and mathematician makes this movie a must-watch one! haha. it is incredible how good and foolproof his plan is. a really good movie to watch!

must-watch!

must-watch!

and in e evening, after a dinner with e rest of e programmers at burger king, we headed back to sch for impresario 2009 grand finals! this year’s show was held at nanyang auditorium, after 3 years in external venues. ha although e venue is less glamourous, e professional-looking stage design and lighting effects by an external events mngt company has made up for it.

impresario 2009 grand finals @ nanyang auditorium

impresario 2009 grand finals @ nanyang auditorium

e show was delayed by abt 30mins but it was a really enjoyable finals! largely due to e high quality of contestants, especially those in e vocal solo catergory! ha. actually i enjoyed most performances in all categories la. really impressive and entertaining. i wld say it is worth every buck of e $15 ticket for 3.5 hrs of non-stop entertainment. a pity e capacity was nt filled, if nt e whole atmosphere wld be much better! congrats to steven, weelun and weilong, as well as their committee for putting up a wonderfully-executed show! may impresario go on stronger and stronger in e years to come!

Good Recommendations

February 7, 2009 4 comments

yest we had a programmers’ outing at this zi char place called 东亚. it is at keong siak road, near outram park mrt. highly recommended! haha. 9 of us ordered a total of 7 dishes – signature tofu (must-try!), claypot chicken (good too!), kang kong, omelette, cereal prawn, sweet-&-sour pork and seafood soup. we all had a very filling and fulfilling dinner man. and e price was reasonable, jus abt $11 each. a nice place tt i will go back again with my family haha.

great food at affordable prices

great food at affordable prices

today went to my old house there for breakfast and there is a new hair salon: snip avenue. it is at blk 509 jurong west st 51 (ex- town council building). it is a big salon at very affordable prices! haha. can you believe it, a hair cut (all lengths) is only $3.80! wow. and haircut + wash + blow + style = $7.80! goodness, even cheaper than the barber la! and for those who wanna colour their hair, it is only $18 for short hair, $28 for medium length and $38 for long hair. where to find this kind of prices?? and if u think e service or quality is low, it is nt ha. i think it is comparable to any neighbourhood hair salon. i will definitely go back there until they decide to raise their prices haa.

anyway e movie was nt too bad i guess. largely due to e real life couple’s natural chemistry and hei ren’s hilarious role and acting. plot was okie but kinda predictable. some funny parts here and there. ha. oh and besides getting to watch e movie free, there was even a door gift! a pack of red packets and $20 kbox voucher ha. nt bad at all man.

明天以后 – a lovely duet by 林峰 and 泳儿. like this song very much and it is currently e most frequently played song on my playlist!

Life Transformers

October 28, 2008 3 comments
like this variety show hosted by 权怡凤 and 李铭顺, airing on channel 8 every monday 8pm. in each episode, the 2 hosts, tgt with some volunteers will help a needy and less-fortunate family. besides giving their house a spring cleaning, they will also help in other ways like finding sch for e kids, applying for financial assistance for e family, help e family member find job etc. a really heartwarming, touching and potentially inspiring show. and i think e 2 hosts and e team of volunteers did a great job! can really see their sincerity in helping e families and tt they are really slogging their guts out in every episode.
life transformers

life transformers

some homes are in such terrible state tt i find it hard to believe that is actually happening in singapore. behind e modern and advanced society lives families that are living under such poor conditions. house infested with cockroaches, super-stained toilet etc. sometimes, cant help but feel how blessed we are. and will think tt our so-called “troubles” and “frustrations” like nt getting gd grades, struggling to meet project deadlines, cant find a well-paying job, etc are insiginificant as compared to the “troubles” these families are experiencing. feel that those ppl are really very strong. if i am in their shoes, i guess tt will b too much for me to take. i wish them all e best and hope their lives improve.
