A Gem in Changi – The Coastal Settlement

February 14, 2012 Leave a comment

this pretty new restaurant-bar located in changi was featured in sat’s Life! section of ST. and we decided to check that place out on the very same day hah. called The Coastal Settlement, this place has great decor (think vintage and modern-chic) and has both indoor and outdoor dining areas. interesting decor items include 4 vespa scooters! and lots of small retro-vintage items on display everywhere. also, with many diff seating arrangements available, this restaurant-bar is great for a grp of frens to chillax.

hidden gem - the coastal settlement

great place to chill the night away

we reached the place at abt 7plus pm without reservations and it was fully booked. damn. we decided to take the bar counter instead of sitting outside hah.  the food they served include asian-local stuff like laksa, and also western stuff like pizza, pasta, fish and chips etc. dear had sausage with rosti and a hot mocha, while i had prawn aglio olio with a pint of ice cold kronenbourg lager hah. they also hav beer served in a nice eiffel tower (3 litres!) hah. so nice, hope can try next time. food are decent, but prices are not exactly cheap.

our dinner

think this is a place i will return, though it is so far from our place hah.

Running with Runkeeper

May 23, 2011 Leave a comment

have been trying to start running to keep fit. since now i usually end work at 5plus 6pm, sometimes i can reach home before 7pm. so quite a good time to go for a run before having dinner at home. and there is this free app called “Runkeeper” which is very useful for running. it keeps track of the distance covered, the pace you are running, the time taken, the calories burnt and it plays music from your ipod playlist. it also charts the route you ran on the map. and at regular intervals, say every 5mins, it will report the distance covered and your average pace. good stuff.

runkeeper, my running companion

over the past 2 weeks, i have done only 3 runs but at least i am starting hah. will try to increase the frequency to at least 2 runs a week, abt 30mins (covering abt 5km) each time. shouldnt be too hard to do. shall have the discipline!

and hope thru this i can become fitter, healthier and shed some weight also haha.

been to 2 restaurants in the past week that are great for gathering with a grp of frens. so here im sharing with everyone!

recommendation 1: 15 minutes cafe and bar, in laselle building, 1 McNally Street 187940

15 minutes

a colleague brought us there last thurs evening. a really nice place for a group of frens to hangout, chill and chit chat. located in the artsy laselle, this cafe is like a glasshouse with high ceilings. the canteen-style table and bench can sit 8 ppl comfortably ha. food wise, the pizzas are not bad. the chicken wings can try too. burger is a no no and pastas are a tad too salty. but well, this place wins at its ambience and design la. there is a live band playing on wed, fri and sat too!

recommendation 2: pepperoni pizzeria, 7 Binjai Park 589821 (another outlet at 6 Greenwood Ave 289195)

pepperoni pizzeria

first went to the greenwood ave outlet several months ago with impre programmers for our gathering. a very nice and relaxed place tucked in bt timah area. went with dear last fri but found that it was closed for renovation. but pasted on their closed door was a notice saying they have a new outlet at binjai park and so we went! nice decor too at this new outlet, with old-school american theme. they are famous for thin-crust pizzas and you can choose 2 different toppings on one pizza. would like to try the super XXL pizza, which measures a whopping 21 inches in diameter, the next time i get to visit with a grp of frens ha. another must-try is their portobello mushroom which is super good and super big!

gather ur good frens and check out these 2 restaurants soon!

Life Is a Choice. Choose Happiness

saw this on facebook. thot it is pretty meaningful and so here i am sharing with everyone.

Five Regrets of the Dying By Bronnie Ware Platinum Quality Author

For many years I worked in palliative care. My patients were those who had gone home to die. Some incredibly special times were shared. I was with them for the last three to twelve weeks of their lives.

People grow a lot when they are faced with their own mortality. I learned never to underestimate someone’s capacity for growth. Some changes were phenomenal. Each experienced a variety of emotions, as expected, denial, fear, anger, remorse, more denial and eventually acceptance. Every single patient found their peace before they departed though, every one of them.

When questioned about any regrets they had or anything they would do differently, common themes surfaced again and again. Here are the most common five:

1. I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.

This was the most common regret of all. When people realise that their life is almost over and look back clearly on it, it is easy to see how many dreams have gone unfulfilled. Most people have had not honoured even a half of their dreams and had to die knowing that it was due to choices they had made, or not made.

It is very important to try and honour at least some of your dreams along the way. From the moment that you lose your health, it is too late. Health brings a freedom very few realise, until they no longer have it.

2. I wish I didn’t work so hard.

This came from every male patient that I nursed. They missed their children’s youth and their partner’s companionship. Women also spoke of this regret. But as most were from an older generation, many of the female patients had not been breadwinners. All of the men I nursed deeply regretted spending so much of their lives on the treadmill of a work existence.

By simplifying your lifestyle and making conscious choices along the way, it is possible to not need the income that you think you do. And by creating more space in your life, you become happier and more open to new opportunities, ones more suited to your new lifestyle.

3. I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings.

Many people suppressed their feelings in order to keep peace with others. As a result, they settled for a mediocre existence and never became who they were truly capable of becoming. Many developed illnesses relating to the bitterness and resentment they carried as a result.

We cannot control the reactions of others. However, although people may initially react when you change the way you are by speaking honestly, in the end it raises the relationship to a whole new and healthier level. Either that or it releases the unhealthy relationship from your life. Either way, you win.

4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.

Often they would not truly realise the full benefits of old friends until their dying weeks and it was not always possible to track them down. Many had become so caught up in their own lives that they had let golden friendships slip by over the years. There were many deep regrets about not giving friendships the time and effort that they deserved. Everyone misses their friends when they are dying.

It is common for anyone in a busy lifestyle to let friendships slip.  But when you are faced with your approaching death, the physical details of life fall away. People do want to get their financial affairs in order if possible. But it is not money or status that holds the true importance for them. They want to get things in order more for the benefit of those they love. Usually though, they are too ill and weary to ever manage this task. It is all comes down to love and relationships in the end. That is all that remains in the final weeks, love and relationships.

5. I wish that I had let myself be happier.

This is a surprisingly common one. Many did not realise until the end that happiness is a choice. They had stayed stuck in old patterns and habits. The so-called ‘comfort’ of familiarity overflowed into their emotions, as well as their physical lives. Fear of change had them pretending to others, and to their selves, that they were content.  When deep within, they longed to laugh properly and have silliness in their life again.

When you are on your deathbed, what others think of you is a long way from your mind. How wonderful to be able to let go and smile again, long before you are dying.

Life is a choice. It is YOUR life. Choose consciously, choose wisely, choose honestly. Choose happiness.

Size Does Matter

September 21, 2010 2 comments

read abt beeconomic from a magazine and thot it was a brilliant idea. beeconomic’s business model is great. this is how it works: each day, it features a deal on cool things to do, see and taste in singapore at heavily discounted (at least 50%) price. it could be restaurant vouchers, massage deals, or even pole-dancing classes! however, the deal is on only if enough ppl bought it before a certain cutoff time. the min no. required to activate the deal is fixed by the merchant and you can monitor real-time on the website how many ppl hav bought the deal. if the deal is on, you will make payment and receive a coupon to redeem the deal. if the deal is off, you wun be charged at all.

beeconomic

interesting concept huh. and it is a win-win for businesses and consumers. businesses get prepaid, guranteed no. of customers and gain publicity (thru beeconomic’s advertisement and thru ppl’s word-of-mouth over facebook, twitter etc. in order to get enough ppl to buy the deal). consumers, on the other hand, benefit from the huge discount and get ideas on wad to do, where to go, wad to eat etc. haha.

brilliant.

upon googling, find out that there are other websites with similar business models: Bigdeal.sg, Deal.com.sg, Socialdeal and Vocherwow. not a bad news to us consumers, as competition will create more variety for us haha. do check out these websites and who noes, you may snag a great deal!

CIMB Star Saver

March 26, 2010 3 comments

wanted to save a portion of my monthly salary in some deposit acct, such as POSB mysavings or Citi step-up acct. but the interest rate for these 2 accts are nt really tt attractive. though citi step-up acct can earn int up to 0.75% (which is considered nt too bad for a savings acct), tt will only happen after a few mths. so while browsing, i came across an attractive savings acct by CIMB – star saver acct.

extract from its website (http://www.cimbbank.com.sg/):

Features
Minimum deposit S$5,000.
Enjoy excellent interest rates*

Month-end incremental deposit
Interest Rate
S$500 or more
1.0%** p.a.
Less than S$500
0.5% p.a.
Interest accrued daily and compounded monthly.
No restriction on withdrawals.
Free cheque books.
Monthly statements.
How to top up your month-end balance.
We offer you many ways to top up the month-end balance of your CIMB StarSaver Account by S$500 or more each month.
You choose the top-up method
You can top up the month-end balance in your account easily – through hassle-free Interbank GIRO, mail-in cheque or deposit at our branch.
You choose how regularly you want to top-up
You can either make regular monthly deposits of S$500 or more, or make periodic lump sum deposits to enjoy the 1.0% p.a. maximum interest.

CIMB will automatically convert your lump sum deposits into equal portions of S$500 a month so that you enjoy the 1.0% p.a.1 maximum interest on your entire savings balance over the months ahead.

it is really quite gd cos u get to earn 1% interest (much higher than normal savings acct and higher than other banks’ monthly savings acct) with just a min of $5000 initial deposit and a monthly savings of at least $500.

since im on leave today, will just go down its branch to open one star saver acct haha.

Dialogue in the Dark

November 12, 2009 2 comments

some budget is set aside every yr for grad connection events, with e aim of connecting graduate trainees of both IB and WM of each batch. yest was our batch’s first grad connection event. supposed to b a BBQ, but due to e potential bad weather at this time of e year, e event was changed to sth tt none of us had experienced before – dialogue in the dark.

we hav nt even heard of it before la. so all who went were pretty excited abt it. we boarded a chartered bus from our office and headed to ngee ann poly at abt 6plus pm after work. reached e venue at 7 or so and we had some briefing before e actual thing starts.

dialogue in the dark at ngee ann poly

some extracts from its website:

“What if you had to go through your daily routine without seeing anything?

Dialogue in the Dark Singapore puts visitors in everyday situations – except in complete darkness. Simple things like crossing the street or visiting a hawker centre suddenly become extraordinary challenges.

Blind guides lead visitors through simulated environments. In the darkness, visitors are forced to rely on their other senses. Role reversal takes place. The blind become the ones with mobility and confidence.

Darkness opens visitors to new ways of experiencing the world around them. Visitors learn what it means to live without sight. In having to navigate darkened environments, they also appreciate the value of effective communication and understand those who see the world differently.”

interesting huh?

and this was a description of wad we went thru in our 1-hour tour:

“You begin your journey into the dark in a group of around eight people. Everyone in the tour is given a white cane. Anything that emits light or sound is covered or silenced. A blind guide will accompany you every step of the way to make sure you feel safe and secure.

Then the journey begins…

As you inch slowly in darkness, you come to an open park with plants, benches, and a fountain. The sound of birds and water completes this invisible landscape.

Boarding a boat, you sail down the Singapore River until you reach the city. Moving into town, you will have to navigate a typical Singaporean housing estate and face challenges like crossing the street through the noise of traffic.

The tour comes to a close as visitors are led to a coffeeshop, still within the darkness. Here you may have a drink and chat with your guide before ending your journey.”

it was a really great and unique experience for all of us. in pitch darkness, we learnt to communicate and express ourselves better. we learnt to b less judgmental. we learnt to trust our colleagues and help each other. we better appreciate how blessed we are with e sense of sight. we leanrt more abt e visually handicapped. and we all had fun. big thank you to serene, our guide! oh btw, this place is actually open to e public (admission at $20 for adults and $12 for students). so do experience it f0r urself!

our first grad connection event - dialogue in the dark

we left ngee ann poly at 9plus pm and our bus brought us to pasta inc., an italian restaurant at jalan besar for our super late dinner! it was a cosy little resturant and our first time there. everyone had a set dinner each and also ordered some starters like calamari to share. my menu: seafood soup, angel hair pasta with crayfish and scallop, cooked aglio olio style, and tiramisu. everything was nt bad, except tt e pasta was kinda overcooked. haha. but since it is free, shall nt grumble much.

dinner ended at abt 11pm and home sweet home after tt. a really great time with other grads. looking forward to e next event! haha.

Good Recommendations

yest we had a programmers’ outing at this zi char place called 东亚. it is at keong siak road, near outram park mrt. highly recommended! haha. 9 of us ordered a total of 7 dishes – signature tofu (must-try!), claypot chicken (good too!), kang kong, omelette, cereal prawn, sweet-&-sour pork and seafood soup. we all had a very filling and fulfilling dinner man. and e price was reasonable, jus abt $11 each. a nice place tt i will go back again with my family haha.

great food at affordable prices

great food at affordable prices

today went to my old house there for breakfast and there is a new hair salon: snip avenue. it is at blk 509 jurong west st 51 (ex- town council building). it is a big salon at very affordable prices! haha. can you believe it, a hair cut (all lengths) is only $3.80! wow. and haircut + wash + blow + style = $7.80! goodness, even cheaper than the barber la! and for those who wanna colour their hair, it is only $18 for short hair, $28 for medium length and $38 for long hair. where to find this kind of prices?? and if u think e service or quality is low, it is nt ha. i think it is comparable to any neighbourhood hair salon. i will definitely go back there until they decide to raise their prices haa.

World’s Best Job?

January 16, 2009 1 comment

as most final year students are frantically looking for a job right now, there is one job tt will certainly catch e eyes of many.

job title: island caretaker
job scope: relax on Hamilton Island, stroll the white sands, soak up the sun, snorkel the reef, feed the turtles, watching the whales and report to a global audience via weekly blogs, photo diaries and video updates
length of contract: 6 months, starting 1 July 2009
salary: A$150,000
job perks: stay rent-free in a multimillion-dollar 3-bedroom beach home, complete with pool and golf buggy

hamilton island, australia

hamilton island, australia

chanced upon this piece of news on yahoo yest haha. Australia’s Queensland state’s tourism board is looking for one person (from anywhere in e world) to fill up this position. if interested, do apply before 22 feb 2009 and compete with 2000 ppl (as of today) for this one job! haha.

a very creative idea by e tourism body huh. instead of doing e usual like advertising on TV, magazines, travel shows etc, they came up with this idea to market hamilton island as THE tourist destination. haha. at least they succeed in making ppl from all over e world to noe of this sunny island off queensland’s coast. in just 3 days, there were more than a million clicks on its website which caused it to crash!

but thinking of it, issit really e world’s best job? wld you wanna spend 6 mths like tt, doing nothing and jus lazing ard e beach by urself? hmmm doesnt seem like a great job to me, although e money is one very huge motivation! A$150,000 for 6 mths! goodness haha.

Life Transformers

October 28, 2008 3 comments
like this variety show hosted by 权怡凤 and 李铭顺, airing on channel 8 every monday 8pm. in each episode, the 2 hosts, tgt with some volunteers will help a needy and less-fortunate family. besides giving their house a spring cleaning, they will also help in other ways like finding sch for e kids, applying for financial assistance for e family, help e family member find job etc. a really heartwarming, touching and potentially inspiring show. and i think e 2 hosts and e team of volunteers did a great job! can really see their sincerity in helping e families and tt they are really slogging their guts out in every episode.
life transformers

life transformers

some homes are in such terrible state tt i find it hard to believe that is actually happening in singapore. behind e modern and advanced society lives families that are living under such poor conditions. house infested with cockroaches, super-stained toilet etc. sometimes, cant help but feel how blessed we are. and will think tt our so-called “troubles” and “frustrations” like nt getting gd grades, struggling to meet project deadlines, cant find a well-paying job, etc are insiginificant as compared to the “troubles” these families are experiencing. feel that those ppl are really very strong. if i am in their shoes, i guess tt will b too much for me to take. i wish them all e best and hope their lives improve.
